When thinking of booking a newborn photos, you might be wondering, what happens if my newborn doesn’t sleep? We’re here to give you a few tips to help your session go as smoothly as possible, and help to ensure some sleepy shots.
While there are some circumstances that prevent families from being able to come in within 2 weeks of the baby being born, most families find this possible. Let us know when the baby has been born, and we will work together to come up with a good day for a session before the baby is older than 2 weeks. This is the magical window when babies are really sleepy, more easily settled, and before fussiness hits. We always have some sleeping time in this window!
Before the session, we send out a detailed guide with some tips to do at home. This makes a HUGE difference when followed! Babies come fed, bathed, and kept awake a little bit, and all of that really helps with sleepiness for the session.
We know you might be worried about how the session will go, but don’t be. If our tips are followed, we will handle the rest! We have many years of experience with all kinds of newborns, and we certainly understand that every baby is different. We use patience and many different calming techniques to get those little ones nice and sleepy. And if you stay nice and calm, your baby will sense that!
If your baby is awake when we start the session, you might be wondering “What if my newborn doesn’t sleep at all for the session?” Trust us, we have had incredibly sleepy babies, incredibly awake babies, sound sleepers, light sleepers… we have seen it all. We go at the baby’s pace and we never push them to do any poses they might not want to. At some point, they do sleep, and that’s when we make our magic!
At the end of the day, some newborns just don’t sleep as much as other newborns. This is where we love capturing some awake photos! They are a fun addition to a gallery, just like this little one’s awake photo. She popped her eyes open for the very last photo of the session!
