As newborn photographers, and moms to 6 kids between us, we understand how overwhelming it can feel to leave the house with a newborn—especially for a photography session. But don’t worry! With a little planning and preparation, you can arrive feeling calm and ready to enjoy this special experience. Here’s some tips and tricks we’ve learned along the way to help make your session as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Be sure to scroll to the bottom to access our free printable prep guide!
Newborns need a lot of stuff, and trying to pack everything last-minute can feel chaotic. Prepare your diaper bag the night before, including essentials like diapers, wipes, bottles, pacifiers, and an extra outfit for the baby. If you have any special items you’d like in the photos, like a family heirloom blanket or a favorite stuffed animal, you are welcome to bring those too.
As a new mom, it’s easy to overthink what to wear. You have a body you don’t recognize. You’re somewhere in between pre-baby and maternity sizes, and nothing fits right. Our advice is to keep it simple and comfortable. Neutral tones and solid colors photograph beautifully and allow your baby to be the focus. Avoid bold patterns or logos, as they can distract from the moment. A soft, flowy dress or a cozy sweater works perfectly. You can also take advantage of our client closet, which fits sizes S-XL.
This one is probably obvious, but a well-fed and clean baby is typically a content baby, which helps set the tone for a smooth session. Plan to feed and change your little one just before heading out. This will increase the chances of them being sleepy and cooperative upon arrival at the studio, and helps us get started right away. Of course, little ones often have a mind of their own, so no worries if a quick change or a snack at the studio is needed to help make them comfortable.
Newborns have their own schedules, and last-minute diaper changes or spit-ups are almost guaranteed. Aim to leave 30 minutes earlier than you think you need to. This buffer will help you stay relaxed, even if delays happen. If you are running more than 15 minutes late, just send us a quick email letting us know you’re on your way. We totally understand that these first few times out of the house with a newborn is challenging!
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask a partner, family member, or friend for help. Whether it’s loading the car, holding the baby while you get ready, or just providing emotional support, a helping hand can make all the difference.
Your newborn photography session is a chance to capture fleeting, precious moments. With a little preparation and these tips, you’ll be able to focus on the joy of creating memories rather than the stress of getting there. We can’t wait to help you celebrate this special time!
These checklists are free and easy to print at home. Use them the night before and/or the morning of your session to be confident that you haven’t missed a thing in preparing yourself and your family for your newborn photos!
